The Magic that is 'The Golden Hour'
Even skin, creamy light, beautiful skies, and that 'magic' that comes along with it; that is what the golden hour is all about. Often I am speaking with clients about location and timing and inevitably the golden hour comes up. I have a lot of very young clients and, understandably, the parents tend to be nervous about doing a session past their bedtime. They are concerned that their child may be cranky and tired, sometimes that is the case, but most of the time my clients who take the risk tend to be pleasantly surprised with how well their children manage. Kids are unpredictable and I cannot tell you how many times I have booked a session with a more suitable hour for the child, only to have the child have a hard time. Countless times I have heard 'my child never acts this way', or 'my child decided to skip their nap and is cranky'. I did a session just the other night and the mom told me that she was so happy that she listened to me because her son did amazingly well and the light was perfect!
Even on cloudy days, the magic hour is still magical. I met with another wonderful photographer, Alysha Spencer Photography, for a photo session. She wanted to capture some images with her two beautiful children. As soon as we started our session, the clouds rolled in and the sun disappeared. Look at that sky, it is beautiful!
Don't get me wrong, you can still capture beautiful images during different times of the day, but sometimes the light tends to be too harsh and there are more shadows on the faces and the ground. The narrative changes.
In the end, parents know their children better than anyone else and they have to trust their instincts. If they know that their child will not cooperate past their bedtime or that the following day their child will be incredibly difficult, they must decide what works better for their family. I am presenting my opinion only and that is all it is; an opinion!
Thank you for reading. I hope this post helps when deciding the ideal time to book a session.
